Happy Earth Day 2009! April 21, 2009

Tomorrow is Earth Day, and you might be wondering what on “Earth” you can do with your kids to celebrate and make a difference in the world. How about these ideas?

  • Lace up your shoes, grab a trash bag and head into the great outdoors. Pick up the stuff that litters the ground in your neighborhood, and talk to your kids about how you’re cleaning up the planet. Wear some gloves too, to protect little fingers from trash — reusable gloves if you have them.
  • Get your hands dirty instead by digging in the dirt — get some seeds, bury them and start growing your own food. Nothing more natural than fruits and veggies that come from your own back yard. Rumor has it, now’s the perfect time to plant lettuce, which just so happens to be good for the waistline.
  • Turn off your TVs (remember: It’s Turn Off TV Week), and bond with your children while you save on electricity.
  • Take a family walk, bike or hike. Breathe the fresh air, feel the wind blow, listen to birds chirp and soak up the elements that surround you.
  • Make some earthly arts and crafts — ask your boys and girls to paint pictures of the planet, craft a recylced collage from old magazines or make your own chalk and dress up your driveway.
  • Talk to your kids about healthy foods, make an effort to feed them healthy foods and then take action and get schools to offer healthy foods.

I could go on, but now it’s your turn: How will you and you kiddos honor Earth Day?
