Ring, Relax and Wait: Monday Mention November 16, 2009
Your kids might know the chant, “Stop, Drop and Roll” for fire safety, but do they know “Ring, Relax and Wait” for elevator safety? Children in New York City just got a lesson from the city’s buildings commissioner and elevator inspectors from the Department of Buildings — they led 150 schoolchildren in Brooklyn in the vertical-living chant so that they’d know what to do if they get stuck in an elevator: Ring the alarm and wait for help.
Seem a bit over-the-top? Nope. Elevators are the real mass transit of New York City, says this article. There are 60,000 of them in residential and commercial buildings, and while most rides are safe, some do have tragic ends.
You might not live in New York City yourself, but why not pass on these three words to your kiddos — just in case.
