When Kids Want to Quit: Monday Mention September 6, 2010

We’ve been discussing the topic of quitting in our household lately. It’s because one of our kiddos joined a team he quickly deemed “no fun.” He dreads practice, hates the time commitment, and can’t dream of ever playing the sport again. He would be thrilled beyond belief if we’d just let him quit, but we won’t do it. It just seems the lesson in letting him give up would be catastrophic — wouldn’t he want to quit anything in his path that wasn’t a perfect fit for him? I tend to think so. So, we’ve told him that he must stick it out. We won’t force him to play another season, but he must finish the one he’s in. After all, he picked the sport, he signed up, and we paid the registration fee, plus the cash for all the required gear. And now it’s his job to follow through. Who knows, once he’s all finished in two months, it’s quite possible he’ll come out smiling, realizing the whole experience wasn’t all that bad. Don’t you think?
