Burn-Free Beach July 16, 2012

The beach is not my ideal summer stop—not because I don’t find it beautiful and breathtaking or anything like that; it’s because the sun is always so scorching hot, and there’s just never enough shade available to protect my pale and pasty complexion. Sure, there are umbrellas that put off a little square of darkness; it’s just not a blast to be the one seeking shelter at all costs. (I should mention that sunscreen does not always agree with my skin, so this sort of cover-up is rarely a solution.) I must tell you, though, that I’ve found a fix for the beach-y blues—evening visits! I went recently with my family crew at the 5:00 hour, and it was grand. No sunscreen necessary, and my wide-open space on the sand was spectacular. To top off the greatness of the day-without-sun, we headed to a beachside seafood restaurant. What defines your perfect beach excursion?
