Fishies, Fishes, Fish September 2, 2012

I think we can all agree that although we may use the term fishies with our little ones, it’s not a real word. But do you know that the word fishes is an actual word, and most of us probably rarely use it as intended? Here’s the scoop: Fishes is the plural of fish when referring to multiple species (e.g., redfish, trout, flounder, etc.). When referring to multiples of only one species, the plural would be fish. So, if you go out and score a whole bucket full of bass, you’ve got fish. If you haul in an assortment of different types, you’ve got fishes (a word that is also used as verb, of course, as in, “He fishes in the river all the time.”)
