In my family, we’ve got birthdays galore at the end of May + all of June — I’m talking May 30, May 31, June 7, June 14, June 20, June 22, and June 26. Whew! A few of these special days belong to kids, which means themes are in order. Well, for the girls, anyway — the boys don’t seem to care. So, this year, for one special 5-year-old celebration, there will be a party featuring a hair station, a nail station, and a tattoo station (temporary, of course!). There will also be food and drinks and some swimming, but the mail attractions will be the beauty tables. I can’t wait! What kinds of parties have you thrown? Please share all clever ideas in the comments.

The universal Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up, and may we suggest you show your teachers some love during May 7-11, 2012. Maybe you can decorate your teacher’s door, have kids deliver single flowers one morning and add them to a parent-provided vase. Determine and drop off favorite snacks and drinks, gather up a collection of cash for a big gift—the possibilities are endless, but time is limited if you want to participate in the official week (of course, you can appreciate your teachers any time and all the time). If you’ve got great ideas for spreading cheer to the teachers of the world, we sure hope you’ll share in comments.

We attended the school carnival this past weekend, and, I must say, I had a lot of fun. Not that I did anything, really, except watch my kids, but that’s the thrill for me — watching my boys have a great time. It was also pretty cool to check out the clever stops that kept all the kids engaged. The No. 1 hit for my kids was the soda ring toss. Parents donated 2L bottles of you-name-it sodas, and a long line of elementary school kiddos wrapped around the school grounds. Each turn came with five chances to ring a bottle, and, somehow, we ended up with eight (EIGHT!) bottles. Yikes. There was also the ever-popular color hair spray — one of my boys chose red; the other went with white. Inflatable bouncy events (obstacle course!), snow cones, fishing game, cake walk, football toss, silent auction, and more filled our morning, and, if your school does not yet host a carnival, you should spearhead the project and make it happen. The kids have fun, the parents do, too, and the point is to raise a little money (armbands sold for $12 pre-sale and $15 at the door for all-you-can-play fun — no tickets to mess with at all). Let us know if you’ve got a fancy school carnival or if you’re planning to bring one to fruition!

You might not be the craftiest person in town, but here’s one artsy idea you can surely implement. Just stock your kiddos with pipe cleaners, pom-poms, felt, foam, glue, and more, and tell them to create animals and aliens and anything their little hearts so desire. Here’s where you come in: just hot glue gun all the crafty creations to pencils! Fancy pencils make great gifts, or you can do like the folks at my kids’ school and sell them in the hallways before the morning bell for 50 cents a piece and then donate the funds to charity. You can also add them to your garage sale inventory, use them as party favors, or jazz them up for special holidays.
